More than 29 million Americans get migraine headaches. For some the pain is a throbbing, pounding headache that just won't let up. Others describe it as feeling like your skull is in the middle of an active war zone, or that an ice pick is stabbing at you from behind your eye. Whatever your symptoms, what's clear is that this type of intense pain cannot be ignored.

That's why it's important to speak with your doctor if you're having trouble with recurring headaches that put a stop to your activities. Fewer than half of all people who experience such pain realize that their recurring headaches are migraines. And fewer still have been treated with medications that can relieve the pain or even help prevent the headaches from occurring in the first place.

Why am I getting migraines?
First, a migraine is a neurobiological disease that originates in the brain. The disease'with its accompanying headaches'is caused by complex chemical reactions that involve inflammation, nerves, blood vessels, and
serotonin (a chemical in the brain that improves communication between brain cells).

Migraines run in families. In fact, fully 70% of people with migraines come from families in which others have the same condition. Being genetically prone to migraines may help explain why people get them, but it is not the full picture. Migraines are typically "triggered," or caused by, an internal or external factor, or multiple factors.

Triggers are very personal. Your particular headaches may result from stress, a change in the weather, fatigue, certain foods, odors, or bright lights. Everybody's different, but one thing is for sure: If you have migraines, you can get help'and relief.
