'My headaches were originally diagnosed as sinus headaches. And so for years, I took every kind of sinus medication you can imagine," remembers Kathy, a magazine editor who lives in New Jersey.

The headaches typically lasted three or four days, during which Kathy struggled to work despite the pain she was feeling behind her right eye.

When she was in her early 40s, a particularly bad headache served as a much-needed wake-up call. "A friend had phoned when I was having one of these so-called sinus headaches. She thought I sounded so terrible that she came over to sit with me and make sure I was all right.'

That visit, Kathy says, made her realize that the headaches might be more severe than she was acknowledging. So she went to another doctor who immediately diagnosed migraines'not sinus headaches'and prescribed a triptan medication that finally relieved her pain.

The doctor also explained to Kathy that certain symptoms or signs could precede a migraine, and that she'd have to watch for them in order to take medication before a headache took hold. After a while, she realized that the "floaters" she sometimes saw before her eyes signaled a headache was coming.

Kathy, now in her early 50s, takes her migraine prevention seriously by avoiding alcohol (which can trigger a migraine), getting plenty of sleep and exercise, and maintaining a healthy diet.
