STRETCHING FOR FIBROMYALGIA RELIEF
Q I have fibromyalgia, and my medication helps alleviate most of my pain. But when I sit for long periods of time, my lower back often causes me problems. Are there any stretches I can do that will help bring me relief?
A Sometimes, the pain you feel in your lower back can actually be radiating from the muscles in your hips, buttocks, legs or sides, so it can take a little bit of trial and error to find the right stretch. Some gentle yoga movements and basic stretches may help'like bending over and reaching toward your toes, gently twisting while you sit in a chair and lying on the floor and arching your back. Be sure not to overdo it! If lying on the floor is uncomfortable, place pillows underneath your back while you stretch. When you stretch, you should be engaging the muscles that are bothering you, and they should feel better after you've done the stretch. You can check out physical therapy websites for a variety of stretches. And you can always schedule a session with a physical therapist for help on finding a stretching plan that's right for you.

GETTING ZZZs WITH PSA
Q I have psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and it's difficult for me to sleep comfortably though the night. What are some ways that I can keep pain at bay while I sleep?
A Pain and stiffness are the usual culprits for sleep troubles in PsA patients, especially if the arthritis is not well controlled. The good news is there are many effective treatments available. So before you invest in pricey products like heated mattresses and contoured pillows, voice your complaints to your doctor, who may be able to make some adjustments in your medication regimen.
