I didn't let PsA stop me!

Not many people can say they have more strength and stamina than they did a decade ago, but at age 61, Charlotte Hartman of Bend, OR, defies the norm. "I walk three miles to work and another three miles back every day'rain or shine." She and her husband, George, have also climbed to the top of Mount Bailey in Oregon and hiked down the Grand Canyon. And the most amazing feat of all is that Charlotte has done it all while battling psoriatic arthritis.

Just before her 40th birthday, Charlotte developed a mild case of psoriasis. "I responded well to topical creams, so I pretty much just went on with my life." When she developed knee problems a few years later, she thought it might be an old injury resurfacing, but then the pain moved to her hands, wrists and fingers. "I knew it must be arthritis, but I had no idea it was related to my skin condition.'

After sharing her symptoms with her doctor, Charlotte was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. "I was put on treatment right away. After years of pain and stiffness, I was able to get my stride back. Now nothing can stop me'not even a mountain!" Here, she shares what's helped her get the spring back in her step.

Don't delay treatment
'A wake-up call for me was when a friend brought over her newborn and I was afraid to pick her up for fear that I might drop her. I was in my 50s and felt helpless. Now that I can see how much better it can get, I'm sorry I delayed!" says Charlotte.

Adapt to sore hands
"I still get some stiffness in my fingers, so I'll use my forearm to open doors, balance plates and even take pills. It's amazing how quickly you adapt!'

Listen to your loved ones
'It's easy to say you're used to the pain. But others can remind you that things can get better'you just have to try!'
